Latest Green News: January 13

Photo by Haplochromis This week’s green news has been big on alternative dwellings, of which I am a mad crazy fan. There was a minor frenzy surrounding this video of a 30-story Chinese prefab hotel going up in just 15 days. I wonder if this is going to end up just another empty shell in one of China’s freaky ghost cities. On the “I want” list is this house you can print. Yup, just program every single niggly detail of the house into your software (which must take, like, 6 years) and out comes your modular home, ready to pop together by whomever happens to be around. I’m…

Latest Green News: January 6

Photo by kokogiak It’s a new year and the environment is in as much trouble as ever, though it looks like people are caring about it less and less. If this poll by the National Association of Realtors is to be believed, then less than 2% of people are even taking the environment into consideration when it comes to voting. Sigh. It’s hard not to just throw your hands up and say, hey, drive that Hummer all you want, we’re all doomed anyway. Maybe I’ve been despairing because I spent most of December sitting on LA’s 10 freeway. You get up close and personal with the hopelessness of…

Latest Green News: December 16

Photo by Afrikaforce It’s official. Politicians hate the environment. Even ones who pretended to like it when they were getting elected a few years back are all, “yeah, I might give the go-ahead for the Keystone XL pipeline any day now”. At this rate, Obama is going to flip-flop his way right out of the White House. Newt and Mitt are also in the hate the environment corner this week, as are some 100 beluga whales, who are hoping global warming would hurry up and warm. Read on for details… Latest Green News That Made Me Go Arrrrgh I have been much shamed by my countries of citizenship…

Latest Green News: December 9

It’s that time again, when we check out what’s been happening in the latest green news that’s fit to print. OK, green news hardly ever gets racy – we leave that to the politicians. Despite any lack of sauciness, you’ll want to read on to find out what Cyndi Lauper has to do with wooly mammoths (no, it’s not their identical hairstyles) and much more… Latest Green News That Made Me Want To Spit The Daily Mail reported this week that tuna are going extinct. Turns out they’re no match for our industrialized and largely unregulated fishing industry. Who knew? According to the article the tastiest tuna will…

Latest Green News: November 30

Here’s your weekly round-up of the latest green news, in all its depressing glory. Actually, I only wanted to spit nails a couple of times this week, so chalk this one up to a win for the environment. Latest Green News That Made Me Want To Spit Big food and big media joined together this week to try to stomp on a proposed list of guidelines around marketing junk food to kids. It’s going to wreck the economy, they screamed, backing up their claims with a self-funded a study (aka some mostly made up numbers). Apparently, the totally voluntary guidelines would kill 75,000 jobs. To me, killing jobs…

The Grand Canyon

Green News for November 23

These are the green news stories that caught my eye this week. Wanted to Punch Someone Did you hear the one about the mega-corporation stepping in at the last minute to quash a ban on plastic water bottles in America’s most treasured natural environment? The NYT reports that Coca-Cola prevented a plastic bottle ban from going through at Grand Canyon National Park because “You’re not allowing people to decide what they want to eat and drink”. Wow, does this mean Coke will be giving up their exclusive beverage contracts at universities, arenas, and airports around the world? Speaking of corporations controlling government organizations, the FDA says the seafood…

Green News Links for November 16

My picks of the best and worst green news of the week in one handy post. Accompanied by lots of slant and a large helping of rant. Made Me Want to Punch Someone Good reports that Burger King launched a barfy campaign to kids, pretending to “give back” to the environment. Their whopper of a donation? One cent per kid’s meal. That is so generous! Of course, the kid has to go to BK’s marketing-to-kids website before they will make the HUGE donation. Want to really help the environment? Don’t buy that meal in the first place. From Switzerland comes just one more reason we should leave dolphins…
