8. How to Get Around in Cambodia
There are so many ways to experience this incredible country that two weeks in Cambodia is not nearly enough! If time is not an issue, reserve at least 6 weeks to really do the country justice.
But, if you only have two weeks to play with, you can still see the big sights (yes, Angkor Wat is worth it) and pack in a little (or a lot) of adventure.
Choose Your Personal Itinerary for Cambodia
We’ve created three distinct 2-week itineraries based on three distinct travel styles.
If you’re like us, you’ll want a little bit of all three! In that case, link these three itineraries together to create a magnificent 6-week Cambodian adventure.
- Our Culture & Mindfulness Itinerary is perfect for spiritual travellers who want to experience the awe of Cambodia’s ancient temples and immerse themselves deep in Cambodian culture.
- Our Adventure Itinerary is great for travellers who want to meet Cambodia’s diverse wildlife and challenge themselves in the great outdoors.
- The Beaches and Islands Itinerary is perfect if you prefer lounging on the beach and sipping cocktails.
Cambodia Itinerary Notes
- All itineraries assume you will be flying in and out of Siem Reap. You can easily adjust them to arrive across the border from Thailand or Vietnam, or to fly in and out of Phnom Penh. If you’re coming in from a neighboring country, check out our guide to getting to Cambodia overland.
- Don’t forget to organize your Cambodia visa before you travel.
- These itineraries are pretty packed. We advise you skip at least one of the recommended destinations and extend your stay elsewhere. Slow travel is always more satisfying!
- Look for the airplane symbol ✈ for travel details and time between destinations.
- To help plan your route, we recommend 12go.asia where you can find transportation times and prices between almost any destinations in Cambodia.

- Day 13-14: Phnom Penh
Siem Reap – 5 Days
Angkor Wat is what brings people to Siem Reap but there are lots of other attractions to keep you busy. You could easily spend a week in Siem Reap and never run out of things to do.
Cultural Things to do in Siem Reap in 5 Days
- Explore Angkor Wat for 2-3 days
- For the best Angkor Wat experience, spend at least one day on a bike tour of the temples
- Get off the tourist trail at Beng Mealea temple
- Experience rural Cambodia on a half-day countryside bike tour
- Get lost in the big market
- Take a cooking class to learn all about Cambodian food culture
Where to Stay in Siem Reap
If you want to splash out on a luxury oasis, Templation looks like perfection. For a less lavish option, we loved staying at Golden Mango Inn, which is a few kilometres from the touristy city centre.
Banteay Chhmar – 2 Days
Optional stop
A remote village in Cambodia’s northwest, Banteay Chhmar is not often visited. However, thanks to a community-based tourism program there, there are plenty of services for tourists if you decide to visit. It’s a great option if you want to experience Cambodian village life and even more ancient temples.
Cultural Things to do in Banteay Chhmar
The community based tourism (CBT) program in Banteay Chhmar will help you experience:
- village tours
- traditional music
- rice flattening
- ancient temples
Where to stay in Banteay Chhmar
You can stay in luxury tents inside the temple grounds! Contact the CBT in Banteay Chhmar to book.
Battambang – 3 Days
Battambang is a sleepy city which makes a very good change from the hectic streets of Siem Reap.
If you decide to skip Banteay Chhmar, you can take a boat trip to Battambang which takes you through remote floating villages and up a river where you will see two major Cambodian social problems — poverty and trash — up close.
Things to do in Battambang
Even though Battambang is something of a provincial town, there are still plenty of things to do.
- Rent a bike for a couple of hours to ride out of town and see what life is really like in Cambodia
- Visit the Killing Caves, where the Khmer Rouge carried out some of their despicable crimes
- Take a tuk tuk tour to Sampeau Hill and its monastery
- Wander the streets, admiring the Chinese-style shophouses and experiencing local life
- Go to the Phare Ponleu Selpak Circus, run by a non-profit performing arts school
Where to Stay in Battambang
Mid-range travellers will like Battambang Dream Bungalows, with views of the rice fields. If you’re looking for luxury, Bric-a-Brac provides quirky home comforts.
(Don’t miss: If you’re visiting Vietnam, our Vietnam itineraries can easily be connected to the Cambodian ones) →
Kampong Chhnang – 2 days
Things to do in Kampong Chhnang
- Take a tour on Tonle Sap Lake to the floating villages
- Do a self-guided cycle tour to Phsar Krom, the vibrant riverside market
- Do the temple loop in Kompong Leaeng

- Enjoy an evening stroll along the riverside
Where to stay in Kampong Chhnang

Phnom Penh – 2 days
Though Phnom Penh is not my favourite city in the world, it does offer a glimpse into a more cosmopolitan side of Cambodia life. It is also the access point to two must-see sites: The Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum.
Things to do in Phnom Penh in 2 Days
- Visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum to see the faces of the Cambodian genocide
- Go to the Killing Fields, especially if you missed the Killing Caves in Battambang
- Shop in the central market and don’t forget to bargain!
- Take a half-day city walking tour to visit the less-seen side of Phnom Penh or go on an architecture tour
- Eat at a socially responsible restaurant like Friends or Dine in the Dark
- Tour the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, and Wat Phnom
- Support Cambodian women by taking a spa break at Daughters of Cambodia Visitor Centre
How to Get Around Phnom Penh
Getting around Phnom Penh can be tough, especially if you don’t like to haggle with tuk tuk drivers. Stop in at a Cellcard office and get a data-only SIM card for your phone (it’s very cheap!). Then download PassApp, which is like Uber but for tuk tuks. PassApp drivers are reliable, honest, and drive new, tiny, eco-friendly tuk tuks.
Where to Stay in Phnom Penh
I really liked my stay at Blue Lime, a quiet hotel with a beautiful pool. I also loved staying at TeaHouse for its big fashionable rooms and for those travelling with kids, it has a fantastic kid-friendly pool. For budget travellers, Mad Monkey Hostels are great!
Cambodia Itinerary 2 Weeks Adventure Tour
For active travellers who want serious levels of off-the-beaten track adventure from their Cambodia 2-week Itinerary, our Adventure Tour Itinerary is for you.
The northeastern region of Cambodia is perfect for adventure travellers, offering off-the-beaten track attractions, jungle adventures, wildlife encounters, and more waterfalls than you can handle.
- Day 1-4: Siem Reap
- Day 4-5: Sra’em / Preah Vihear (optional)
- Day 6-8: Banlung
- Day 7-10: Sen Monorom
- Day 11-13: Kratie
Siem Reap – 4 Days
Every Cambodian adventure should begin in Siem Reap with a visit to the Angkor Temples. As an adventure travellers, you’ll want to rent a bike or motorbike to explore the temples and countryside at your own pace, without the hassle of tuk tuks and tour guides.
Adventurous Things to do in Siem Reap in 3 days
- For the best Angkor Wat experience, spend at least one day on a bike tour of the temples or rent a bicycle to explore on your own
- Experience rural Cambodia on a bike tour
- Visit the big market, possibly the most incredible market we’ve seen in the world!
Where to Stay in Siem Reap
If you want to splash out on a luxury oasis, Templation looks like perfection. For a less lavish option, we loved staying at Golden Mango Inn, which is a few kilometres from the touristy city centre.
Sra’em / Preah Vihear Temple – 2 Days
Optional stop
Pocketed in a remote corner of Cambodia near the Thai border, 30km from the town of Sra’em, this temple makes an adventurous stop on your Cambodian journey. You can skip it and go straight to Banlung, but it makes a good stopover to break up the bus journey.
Things to do in Sra’em
- Visit the Preah Vihear Temple, which predates Angkor Wat by a century
- Climb the Ancient Staircase, said to have 2,442 steps. If you do it, please count them and let us know!
Where to Stay in Sra’em
There’s not much selection in Sra’em but you can find you hotel here.
Banlung / Ratanakiri – 3 days
- Swim with the locals in Yeak Laom Volcanic Lake
- Take a tuk tuk tour of the waterfalls around town
- Camp under the stars on a 3-day trek into the jungle
(Don’t miss: Our complete guide to jungle trekking near Banlung) →
Where to Stay in Banlung
I stayed at Bamboo House homestay, which is a simple (and cheap!) homestay. Chatting with Mr. Pov and his family will give you great insight into Cambodian family life. If you want something a little more private, Tree Top Eco-Lodge is a popular choice.
Sen Monorom / Mondulkiri – 4 Days
- Volunteer with elephants at Elephant Valley Project sanctuary. Most people we met were doing the 3 day 2 night option and thought it was the perfect length of time. You can visit anywhere from 1/2 day to a week or more.
- Fly over Bousra Waterfall on the Mayura Eco-Park Zipline course
- Visit Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary and stay overnight at the Jahoo Gibbon Camp, a Bunong community Ecolodge
Where to Stay in Sen Monorom
Indigenous People Lodge is nice a collection of rustic cabins on the edge of town. If you’d prefer something more central, stay in the city at Avocado Guesthouse.
Kratie – 3 Days
Adventurous things to do in Kratie in two days
- Visit the Irrawaddy dolphins
- Explore Koh Trong island by bicycle
- Take a 2-day cycle trip to a homestay on Koh P’dau island
- Watch the sunset over the the Mekong
Where to Stay in Kratie
I really liked Le Tonlé Guesthouse, which is a training centre for underprivileged Cambodian youth. The upstairs rooms are simple but great. The downstairs dorm rooms are pretty cramped (though it was fine for one night). Arun Mekong, located on Koh Trong Island, is the closest you’ll get to luxury in Kratie.
Cambodia Itinerary 2 Weeks Beaches & Islands Tour
- Day 1-3: Siem Reap
- Day 4-5: Kampot
- Day 6-8: Koh Ta Kiev
- Day 9-11: Chi Phat
- Day 12-13: Koh Kong (optional)
- Day 14: Phnom Penh
This itinerary takes you to explore our favourite part of Cambodia, the south coast! From the French colonial town of Kampot to jungle villages, to exotic islands and beautiful beaches, this itinerary will restore your soul.
Siem Reap – 3 Days
Things to do in Siem Reap for Three Days
Though Siem Reap doesn’t have beaches or islands, we include it in the itinerary because the Angkor Temples really can’t be missed. If you don’t care about Angkor, you might consider flying into Phnom Penh and heading straight for Kampot. That way you can spend more time on the island of Koh Ta Kiev and in Kampot.
- Explore the Angkor Temples for two days
- Experience rural Cambodia on a bike tour
Where to Stay in Siem Reap
If you want to splash out on a luxury oasis, Templation looks like perfection. For a less lavish option, we loved staying at Golden Mango Inn, which is a few kilometres from the touristy city centre.
Kampot – 2 Days
We love Kampot, so if you can massage your itinerary to spend a few more days here, do it!
Things to do in Kampot
- Have a rock climbing adventure with Climbodia like I did. Beginners welcome!
- Take a SUP tour on the river
- Relax in a riverside resort
(Don’t miss: Our full guide to adventurous things to do in Kampot) →
Where to Stay in Kampot
If you want a modern hotel in the city centre, Hotel Five.S is central, clean, and fairly new. It also has a quiet pool area for lounging in the afternoon.
If you decide on a longer stay in Kampot (which I highly recommend) venture out to Sabay Beach Resort, which I absolutely loved.
Budget travellers will find cheap huts with great river swimming at Samon Village where we stayed during our bike trip.
Koh Ta Kiev – 3 Days
The beauty of Koh Ta Kiev is that there is really nothing much to do. It is a tiny island a 45-minute boat ride from Sihanoukville. With no electricity and no running water it’ll give you a real Robinson Crusoe experience.
Things to do on Koh Ta Kiev
- Go for a walk through the jungle to Naked Beach
- Visit the absinthe distillery
- Swim in the magical phosphorescent waters
- Enjoy happy cookies and great cooking at Ten103
Where to Stay on Koh Ta Kiev
We absolutely loved our stay at Ten103 Treehouse. Our little hut, The Crab Shack, was hidden away in the jungle and the food there was fantastic!
Chi Phat – 3 Days
This eco-tourism village is in the jungles of the Cardamom mountains. Ex-poachers now act as guides and the homeowners in the village earn money through their homestays. It’s a bit of an adventure just to get to Chi Phat but completely worth the effort.
Things to do in Chi Phat
Wildlife Alliance runs the community-based tourism program in Chi Phat which will organize any activities and accommodation you need.
- Go on a jungle trek, mountain bike tour, or kayaking tour
- Take an evening sunset, fireflies, and starlight cruise
- Learn about Cambodian rural life on a village tour
- Swim at Chay Khpos waterfall
Where to Stay in Chi Phat
All accommodation in Chi Phat is organized through the CBT. You can choose between a simple homestay, a guesthouse, or a private bungalow.
Koh Kong – 2 Days
Optional stop
Koh Kong is not much of a destination but i is a convenient place to stop if you’re heading into Thailand.
If not, we only recommend Koh Kong if your budget stretches to the fabulous 4 Rivers Floating Lodge.
Things to do in Koh Kong
- Visit Tatai Waterfall (we don’t usually do waterfalls but we made an exception for Tatai!)
- Take a boat trip or a walk through Peam Krasop Mangrove Forest
Where to Stay in Koh Kong
The 4 Rivers Floating Lodge has been on our bucket list ever since we cycled through Koh Kong in 2014. We will get there someday — and if it fits in your budget, we recommend it!
For a more affordable riverside stay, try Thmorda Riverside Resort which is where we ended up after our first guesthouse in Koh Kong turned out to be absolutely awful.
Phnom Penh – 1 day
Things to do in Phnom Penh in 1 Day
- Visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum to see the faces of the Cambodian genocide
- Take a half-day city walking tour to visit the less-seen side of Phnom Penh
- Eat at a socially responsible restaurant like Friends or Dine in the Dark
- Support Cambodian women by taking a spa break at Daughters of Cambodia Visitor Centre
Need a 3-Week Itinerary for Cambodia?
If you’ve got 3 weeks in Cambodia, you can easily combine sections of each of our itineraries to create a great trip. You could also just take one of our 2-week itineraries, slow it down, and have a much more relaxed trip.
However, if you want to pack a little more in, here are my suggestions.
- You could do the full Culture & Mindfulness itinerary, and then add on the first week of the Beaches & Islands itinerary.
- Do the full Beaches & Islands itinerary, but add in some extra time in Phnom Penh and go to Battambang as well.
- Take the Adventure itinerary and then add in Battambang and the areas around Phonm Penh.
Or else, just cherry pick from each of the three itineraries. Cambodia is small enough that you could spend a week in the north, a week around Siem Reap and Phonm Penh, and then a final week on the south coast.
Whatever you do, make sure you leave enough time to truly enjoy your 3 weeks in Cambodia.
How to Get Around Cambodia
Getting around Cambodia can be an adventure in itself!
Travelling between more popular destinations can be done by bus some of which are even comfortable and reliable.
Giant Ibis Bus
Giant Ibis is by far the best bus company in Cambodia. Unfortunately their routes are limited to only a few destinations within the country.
They also travel outside the country. If you’re heading to Vietnam after Cambodia, you can take the Giant Ibis bus from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City. If you’re heading to Thailand, they also run a bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok.
(Don’t miss: See our complete guide to getting between Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos) →
Other Cambodian bus companies
The cheaper bus companies will get you a little farther off the beaten path in Cambodia. Unfortunately, they tend to be slow, a little rickety, and can take up to twice as long as advertised.
(My 4-hour bus ride from Phnom Penh to Kratié took a little more than 8 hours!)
Use 12go.asia to find route info, prices, and to book your tickets.
Mini busses in Cambodia
When you get truly adventurous, mini busses are the only budget option in Cambodia. The ones I took were all fairly comfortable, but since they tend to run around town for hours picking up various locals and sundry items like bags of rice and motorbikes, Cambodian mini-busses can test your patience.
You can book your mini bus at your hotel, guesthouse, or hostel.
Private taxis in Cambodia
It’s easy to hire private taxis to take you from city to city if you have the budget, but you will miss out on the fun of independent travel!
You can book your taxi at any hotel, guesthouse, or hostel.
Tuk tuks in Cambodia
In Cambodia cities, you’ll almost certainly use tuk tuks to get around.
Don’t forget to bargain for your ride! Go into the negotiation with an idea of what you’d like to pay and a sense of humour. If you can’t get the price you want, don’t get mad. Just laugh and walk away. There’s always another tuk tuk or 50 right around the corner.
When I got tired of tuk tuk negotiations in Phnom Penh, I found PassApp to be invaluable. It’s like Uber, but you can pay cash. All my rides with Pass App were hassle-free and cheaper than using the traditional tuk tuks. They also have cars you can hire, but I never found the need to get one.
