Hike Armenia: Syunik Region

Syunik region is considered the most picturesque and attractive region for Armenia tourism. This is where you’ll find the most important historical sights — yet history is only half of the Syunik story.

The nature will make you wish you were a bird, able to soar over majestic mountains and into deep gorges. For hiking, Syunik is just perfect. Every step will reveal a new wonder, including monasteries, old villages, bridges, caves and, of course, unique nature.

One popular hike starts from Tatev monastery, one of the most beautiful and popular monastery complexes in Armenia.

The fairytale Tatev Monastery make a wonderful hike.

The hike follows a mountainous road behind the monastery to an Aghavni village. Another trail from Tatev monastery leads down into the gorge to Devil’s Bridge — a popular place for people who love to go to the extreme on their travels.

A new swinging bridge across a gorge has made it possible to visit Khndzoresk cave village. The ancient settlement there was inhabited for a thousand years and traces of those ancient inhabitants can still be found.

Old Khot village, which echoes with the atmosphere of Machu Picchu, is another breathtaking spot for hiking in this region. When hiking in Syunik, the village — along with Old Harjis, Zorats Karer, Halidzor ropeway and Mets Anapat monastery — should be on your list!

Hiking in Armenia: Lori Region

The pearl of Armenia, Lori is a green paradise and another popular place for hiking in Armenia. The stunning landscapes of the Lori mountains are covered with pine forests, virgin lakes, and enigmatic ancient monasteries which will take you far from reality.

One hiking trail in the Lori region starts from the 5th Century Odzun church, where church records on the walls have survived the passing decades. The next stop is Kobayr monastery in Kobayr village. This medieval church is located on the edge of the gorge through which the Debed river flows. The landscape here is truly dreamlike.

The starting point of another route through Lori region begins from the 10th Century Sanahin monastery, once the religious and cultural center of Armenia. The road then leads to Kayan fortress, built in 1233.

Visit Sanahin Monastery in Armenia.

The black fortress is built between two monasteries, Sanahin and Haghpat, which is the next sight on the hike. Built in the 10th Century, Haghpat monastery was once a university and scientific center. Today it is a large monastery complex where walkers can explore medieval churches.

I think Armenia is a beautiful and unique country. I was there but only in the capital of Yerevan. I wanted to travel around Armenia. Was there a lot of problems? What problems did you encounter?

We haven’t travelled there yet – this post was written by a guest writer. But we have read a lot about others travelling in Armenia and they haven’t encountered any unusual problems (that wouldn”t happen in other countries).

Thank you, I’ve never been to Armenia, but after reading your article, I seemed to be there. Like if I read the fantasy “The Lord of the Rings”. Did you see hobbits there?) I hope to visit there someday.

Armenia is a wonderful country with much sights worth seeing. I was here many times, but can’t forget my last winter in the most famous ski resort Bakuriani. This vacation still brings up much emotion. Freeride is really worth doing.

Armenia is one of my favorite places where I’d like to spent my vacation. The first reason for this is the picturesque landscape. My first hiking tour was in Karabakh and it was unforgettable. My next destination is Lori region.
